Averaging, charges, and taxes
Averaging down means buying more of a stock at a lower price so your weighted average cost falls. It can reduce the price needed to break even — but it also increases total capital at risk if the thesis was wrong. “Catching a falling knife” is a real behavioral risk; use position sizing and a clear invalidation level.
Brokerage, STT, GST on charges, and exchange fees reduce net returns. Our profit mode applies percentage charges on buy and sell notionals as a simplified model — your broker’s actual slip may differ slightly.
In India, short-term capital gains on listed equity and equity funds may be taxed differently from long-term holdings depending on current law; rules change with the Union Budget. In the US, short-term gains are typically taxed as ordinary income and long-term at reduced rates for many taxpayers — always verify with a qualified professional.
For wealth accumulation scenarios, pair this with SIP, Lumpsum, and Compound Interest calculators.
Frequently asked questions
What is averaging down?
Buying additional shares at a lower price than your earlier lots so the weighted average cost per share falls. It can improve breakeven math but increases capital at risk if the investment thesis is wrong.
How is weighted average price calculated?
We sum total shares bought, sum total cash invested across purchases, and divide invested amount by total shares for a per-share average.
How does profit or loss mode work?
You enter buy and sell details plus optional percentage charges on each leg. The tool estimates net proceeds versus cost including charges.
Does the currency dropdown convert exchange rates?
No. It only formats numbers. Enter all legs in a consistent currency.
Are brokerage and taxes modeled exactly?
We use simple percentage placeholders. Real slips include STT slabs, GST on brokerage, and other fees that can differ by broker.
Is trade data sent to DoItSwift?
No. Calculations stay in your browser.
